Though often grouped with other Caribbean Island foods as “Caribbean Cuisine,” Haitian food has a unique style and flavor of its own. Haitian cuisine is based on French and Creole cooking styles, which includes heavy pepper seasoning. Djon-djon (mushroom) rice is one of the native Haitian dishes. Calalou (a spinach-based dish) and pain patate are other native dishes. Griot (fried pork), Du Riz Cole (red rice and beans), Soup Joumou (squash soup), and fried plantains are amongst the items found at almost any Haitian restaurant.
Along the coast, fish, lobster and conch are plentiful. When traveling to Port-au-Prince, an Italian restaurant or two may be spotted, or even a Kentucky Fried Chicken. For the most part, however, Haitian dining involves Haitian cuisine. The safest bet for the unadventurous traveler would be to dine at one of the restaurants of the major hotels. For the adventurous, an affordable meals can be found at local eateries all over town.
